When reporters asked Haaland about data centers from April until July of 2026, she gave standard politician word salad non answers. These answers attempted to sound concerned about the devastating effects of data centers with no commitment to stop their construction. On September 6th, Haaland slightly amended this non-commitment in a statement ot the New Mexico Courier saying “she would support a moratorium until proper guardrails are in place.” Her amended statement follows a public push to withhold votes from Haaland until she banned data centers in New Mexico that is quickly gaining momentum.
Haaland is nervous those of us exposing her siding with tech companies is cracking her carefully crafted progressive veneer, exposing her as a stooge for the capitalist class (her own video with Cory Booker didn’t do her any favors on this front either). But her new statement is more of the same. There are not any guardrails that prevent data centers from using millions of gallons of water, immense amounts of power and make incredible amounts of noise. The technology they house is creating AI that deprives the population of critical thinking skills. Tech capitalists create mass surveillance tools from the data stored and analyzed in these centers. They serve no use for humanity besides enriching tech capitalists.
AI data centers being constructed without guardrails is not the problem. County commissioners signing NDAs with tech companies when cutting data center construction deals is not the problem (though the fact this is legal gives a good indication of who our “democracy” is really for). The problem is data centers being constructed AT ALL. Deb’s statement shows she is scared of pressure, so now is the time to turn it up!
